Sharon Miller, Marine Safety Officer at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, teaches VIMS researchers about the equipment and techniques they can use to lessen the risks of working in cold water. VIMS researchers encounter water temperatures in the mid 30s during wintertime research in Chesapeake Bay and nearby coastal waters, and even more frigid conditions during research trips to the Arctic and Antarctic. Going overboard under these conditions with no protection puts the body at immediate risk. Experts estimate that the human body can survive fewer than 15 minutes in water below 32 degrees. In this video, Miller and members of Dr. Deborah Bronk’s Nitrogen Research Laboratory at VIMS practice cold-water survival techniques in the Adair Pool at the College of William and Mary, ironically enough on a 90° July day. Bronk and her graduate students and technicians are preparing for upcoming trips to far northern Alaska, where a 3-year grant from the National Science Foundation allows them to study the Arctic coastal ecosystem, and how climate change might affect nutrient supplies, the food web, and native peoples. Water temperatures in the Chuckchi Sea, their field site, are cold even in the summer. In winter, they hover around -1.8°C (28.7°F).
